Assassin's Creed Odyssey takes players on a monumental journey across ancient Greece, blending historical warfare with rich mythological encounters. Among the most unique challenges in the game is the confrontation with the legendary Sphinx, a mythical beast that favors intellect over brute strength. To secure one of the hidden artifacts of Atlantis, players must correctly answer a series of riddles and activate the corresponding symbols in the correct order.
How to Find the Sphinx and Begin the Quest
Before you can test your wits against the mythical creature, you must initiate the proper storyline. The questline begins with a mission called A Family's Legacy, which eventually leads players to the region of Boeotia. Once you arrive at the Scorched Lands of Boeotia, you will locate the ancient Isu ruins where the Sphinx awaits under the cover of night.
Interacting with the artifact at the center of the ruins triggers the appearance of the creature. Unlike other mythical beasts in the game, defeating this enemy does not require intensive combat preparation or high-level gear upgrades. Instead, you must carefully listen to the dialogue options and prepare your mind for a high-stakes game of trivia.
Answering the Randomized Riddles Correctly
The Sphinx will ask you a total of three riddles chosen randomly from a pool of twelve possible options. These questions cover natural elements such as time, celestial bodies, and various forces of nature that ancient philosophers contemplated. Navigating this sequence requires concentration because guessing incorrectly results in immediate death for your character.
Some of the common riddles involve concepts like the sun, stars, or rivers that flow continuously without stopping. For instance, if the creature describes something that hides during the day but guides travelers at night, the correct answer is the stars. Another frequent question references time as a destructive force that conquers all empires and grinds down solid rock.
Activating the Correct Symbols on the Pillars
Providing the correct verbal answers to the creature is only the first phase of solving this ancient puzzle. After the dialogue ends, players must walk around the ruins and manually interact with the glowing symbols carved into the surrounding pillars. You must only press the symbols that directly correspond to the verbal answers you provided moments earlier.
If you touch a symbol that was not part of your riddle answers, the security mechanism triggers a fatal energy blast. Taking your time during this phase ensures that you do not accidentally lose your progress or restart the sequence from your last checkpoint. Once all three correct pillars are activated, the creature will be defeated, allowing you to claim the Prize of the Sphinx.
Unlocking Rewards and Narrative Progress
Completing this encounter successfully rewards players with an ancient Isu artifact necessary for sealing the gates of Atlantis. Additionally, you will receive the legendary Sphinx Figurehead for your naval vessel alongside a substantial amount of experience points. Mastering this trial demonstrates that a true legendary hero requires wisdom just as much as physical combat prowess.
